The history of this piece of clothing relates back in the 1930s when Champion designed a hooded sweater to dress workers in the frozen warehouses of New York City. This all-round garment quickly became the official outerwear for most military and police academies and most university sports teams.
In the 1940s and 1950s the groundbreaking sportswear designer Clair McCardell drawn entire collections based on this type of sweater. When the hoodie made an iconic appearance in the blockbuster Rocky in 1976, it became extremely popular.
Thus, several mainstream designers like Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger have used it for their elegant sportswear lines. But at the same time, as the criminality was rising in big cities during the 1980s, the hoodie provided anonymity to anyone with criminal intent. Eventually, the so-called Muggers, the Stick-Up Kids and many other gangbangers kept low profile wearing hoodies and adapted it to their gang attire. By the 1990s, the hip-hop movement and several other subcultures like skaters, surfers and even punks had adopted the hoodie.
Noir Basic now designs its high-end vision of this humble garment, worn everyday by striving athletes, workingman heroes and street thugs.
