NOIR BASIC

 Originally introduced by the US Navy in the late 1930s, the G-1 is the most historical and well-known American flight jacket. During the heavy bombing raids Second World War where ambient temperature could reach minus 50 degrees in the aircraft cabins, this thick leather jacket with a mutton fur collar helped to stay warm in the air. It features a bi-swing pleat in the shoulder and double armpit gussets providing for ease of movement in the small cockpits to the pilots. Its official use lasted until 1978 when the US Congress forced its cancellation because its extraordinary popularity was overwhelming the Navy’s supply system.

 The G-1 then became famous worldwide after Tom Cruise wore one in Top Gun in 1986, turning this specialized jacket into a fashion item. Today Noir Basic revisits this symbol of honor, adventure and style.
